What exactly constitutes a dental emergency? Perhaps you think that toothache that’s been going on for some time or a chipped tooth isn’t a big deal. However, when the pain of your toothache becomes unbearable or your chipped tooth begins to fracture, suddenly your oral health dilemmas become big problems. We’re here to help with our emergency dentist in Asheville.
Let’s talk about what a dental emergency could mean and how you can decide whether you can wait until our regular office hours or if you need to speak with our Asheville family dentist right away.
Broken Tooth
Were you or your child in an accident that led to a broken tooth? A fractured tooth causes more problems than you think. Many times a fracture can actually spread, leading to cracks throughout the tooth that you may not be able to see, which could even lead to tooth loss. What should you do?
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses on the area to keep any swelling down. Call an emergency dentist near Asheville immediately!
Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth isn’t pleasant in any given situation, and this constitutes a dental emergency. You’ll need to call your emergency dentist in Asheville to see if you can get in for care after-hours if the accident doesn’t happen during regular office hours. While you’re getting in touch with our office, what can you do?
Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it’s dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If that isn’t possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and get dental attention as quickly as possible. Remember to take the tooth with you!
Bitten Lip or Tongue
Ouch! We’ve all done this on occasion. As long as the bite wasn’t severe, this may not be a dental emergency. However, you should still clean the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Toothache
A toothache is your body’s way of telling you that something’s wrong with your mouth. Toothaches are best addressed as soon as possible, but if the pain becomes excruciating, contact your dentist immediately. If the pain is tolerable and you prefer to wait until regular office hours, there are a few things you can do in the meantime to help.
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss or an interdental cleaner to ensure that there’s no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue. If the pain persists, give us a call.
A Possibly Broken Jaw
This is a dental emergency. Apply cold compresses to control swelling. Go to your emergency dentist in Asheville or a hospital emergency department immediately.
Objects Caught Between the Teeth
Depending on what the object is, you may be able to remove it yourself. Try to gently remove the object with dental floss; avoid cutting the gums. Never use a sharp instrument to remove any object that is stuck between your teeth. If you can’t dislodge the object using dental floss, contact an emergency dentist near Asheville.
